Derby QUAD has begun work on an exciting documentary project for Derby City Council. QUAD will be working with community members from Chellaston, Allenton and Mackworth to create documentaries about their recently opened Libraries. The documentaries will celebrate personal stories behind each Library, the range of activities on offer and the impact they’ve had on the community.

Darius Powell, project co-ordinator for QUAD, and local film maker Owen Tooth have begun meetings with the library panels and community members to plan the project. Training is also being provided on creating a documentary, to involve as many community members in the process as possible.

“The project is progressing very well. Everyone we’ve met has been very passionate about their Library and being involved in the documentary. We’ve been made very welcome and look forward to supporting each Library to tell their stories through film.” – Darius Powell, QUAD

The project is funded by Big Lottery and the final documentaries will be screened in September 2011, more information will be available in the upcoming months.

Derby Local Studies Library and Living Derby commissioned QUAD to support young people in creating short documentaries about sports in Derby. Using the Local Studies Library archives as inspiration – the young people worked with Living Derby and Derby QUAD to realise their ideas through research, media training and production. The resulting videos will become part of the Local Studies Library’s archive for future generations to access.

The project introduced a new generation to the Library’s wealth of archival material and developed their skills in media production.

::CHECKTHISPECKER:: & The Snug Recording Co. presented a two day creative workshop as part of the Cultural Landscapes training programme at QUAD. For information on future training courses please visit  http://www.derbyquad.co.uk/courses

Day One: Audio Production Workshop

This entry level workshop was aimed as an introduction to music creation. Taught on Apple’s GarageBand software, participants learned the basics of musical structure, song deconstruction, working with loops, programming and recording their own songs.

Day Two: VJ Workshop

This entry level workshop was ideal for those interested in the art of live visual performance, a skill set which can be applied to many live performances including festivals, club nights, exhibitions and installations and also music videos and other promotional material.

We helped in the creation of graphic, illustrated, animated, photographic and video content; which participants then mixed live against their own track [that they created during the first day’s session], using Modul8 VJ software and then finally uploading the VJ style music video at the end of the day.

QUAD Artist Darius Powell worked with a group of young people to help improve their animation skills. The group worked to create stop-motion animations and the work can be viewed below. If you would like learn more about animation then please do get in contact via dariusp@derbyquad.co.uk for a quote.

I really learnt a lot of things.  I especially enjoyed the whiteboard animation because I think there are so many possibilities.  I am interested in doing much more and this has given me lots of ideas and confidence. The way in which you talked to us and gave us ideas was great.”

Bethany Varndell-Dawes visited the Digital Studio to observe tutor Glenn Millington as part of her PGCE research at University of Plymouth. We were happy to support Beth in her research and wish her all the best in her studies.
“I just wanted to say thanks to you and the team for letting me observe the lesson last week, I found it really insightful and very useful.
I thoroughly enjoyed the day and it has given me an opportunity to see what other kind of teaching jobs are available within the lifelong learning sector.
From what I observed and from the conversations I had with the learners, the lesson was engaging and enjoyable. Glenn is a great tutor and
what he was teaching was relevant and clearly explained, also fun!
I loved QUAD when I was living in Derby and hope it continues, I think it is a great asset to the city and the arts.”

Artist Paul Davies, with Darius Powell, have been working with DigiSQUAD attendees to create Stop-Motion animations on the theme of Time Travel. Well done to everyone who took part, the animations are displayed below.

“Brilliant! Loved it. It’s workshops like this that make you realise why we do what we do. All 4 boys were a joy to work with. It re-lights your creative spark!” (Paul, Artist)

“I love creating animation, this was brilliant and I want to do more!”

“I’ve never done this before but it’s so easy and fun. I want “I Can Animate” at home.”

“I’ve done animation before but not 2D stop motion. It really needs a lot of patience. It was hard work but I enjoyed it.”

“I’ve really enjoyed it, thank you!”
